My parents have had two green velvet sofas for almost 40 years now (they got them some time in the early 70s, I'm assuming) and they have held up pretty well considering the two children, three dogs, and countless holiday parties with our large extended family they have endured. Granted, they are in the living room and get a lot less use than the other sofas, but after a few decades they are still looking pretty fresh!
lad you asked this question because I'm thinking about for my next reupholstery which will be around in 2 years time? I chocolate brown....and call me crazy but purple velvet is really stuck to my brain too!
ugh. The grey ones are divine! Actually, velvet holds up pretty well, I've heard. I'm assuming though, having cats, you may just have to run a lint roller or lay out a blanket...but c'mon, they totally look worth it to me ;-)
i want to do a super washed out lavendar-y gray velvet goodness on the settee....but i think erin gates would tell you to stay far, far away from blue.
I would love to know what a pain in the ass it is to own one of those, especially the one in the second to last photo. Really, the entire room. Gorg!! Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving gorgeous!! Whitley www.thequeencitystyle.com
girl, you are going to be dedicating your life to picking up kitty hairs out of the upholstery. if you're used to that (as you know animal hair does not discriminate between fabrics), then go for it!!!
I would love love love to reupholster my current couch in velvet! Seriously, I would go for it. From what I've been told, though, you want to do it in a pretty durable velvet, cause certain ones leave behind a butt print for all the world to see. And no one likes a butt-print sofa.
I am tempted to say, and therefore will: who cares? They look fab.... I would deffinitely do mohair velvet it stands the test of time really well, has a robust, short pile and takes colour beautifully, almost 'pre-vintage', linen velvet is also great and withstands a lot. Hope you get your dream and wait to hear how it goes down in red or orange or pink or blue... somewhere over the rainbow.
love the new bright ink blot prints! I had a black velvet sofa and only kept it a few months - it constantly looked disgusting, like it had dandruff. You can see everything on it! I think a pale gray would be the way to go... xoxo -e (modern24seven)
I found an incredible dark blue velvet sofa for $700 the other day. But it was 9 feet long - I've got no room for it! I might have to add on a room because it was a beauty :)
I didn't know you were a cat owner too. I don't have one but love them but no, I wouldn't advice with pets unless you keep a lent roller on you at all times.
Great images and I really want a fluffy white rug like the one with the blue sofa.
I just blogged about velvet too! Only my post was on pants. I'm LOVING velvet on a couch. Honestly I haven't seen many rooms with this look but these photos are fantastic. I especially love the grey! Isn’t That Charming.
Love velvet on furniture, I have specified many many times. On that note- yes the hair will stick to it and if your sofa is on the dark side it will be more noticeable BUT the hair will always be there so its just a matter of seeing it in contrast :) Velvet can be so durable and luxurious. It's a great option :)
Forever ago, I came across an image of a man sitting on a sofa that had been just draped with blue velvet fabric (not even upholstered on), and I've been dreaming of how glamorous that's looked ever since. Always wanted to try it some winter, but I can never find the image again!
We have a velvet sofa, and I've never for a second regretted buying it. It's very good at shrugging off anything you might spill on it and looks and feels so luxurious. We don't have a cat (yet!) but I read that something about the pile makes it impossible for their claws to get any traction so they can't claw it apart and as for hairs...well, they'll leave those on whatever sofa you pick!

ReplyDeleteMy next sofa will definitely be velvet. Don't care if I have to vacuum or lint roll it every day. I say do it! The blanket is a good idea too.
ReplyDeleteI love these! I think the blue is definitely my favorite!

That first shot in AWESOME. Perfect color.
ReplyDeleteLove me a grey velvet sofa but you're right...I don't think it would be manageable! Maybe one day when I have a house with a fancy unused room :)
