2013 Trends: Egyptian Re-Revival

I realized that some of my predictions needed more illustration and if I tried to fit them all into one post, it would be ridiculously long. So I'm going to spread these out a little bit.  I'm going to get the most off-the-wall one out of the way first. Get this... Egyptian RE-Revival. I'm talking about Egyptian Revival revival. Now hear me out...

It's a little bit boho, a little bit art deco glam. As you can see by my old living room, I really thought this trend was going to kick off earlier this year, especially after the Topshop Unique Spring 2012 collection.

I've seen it popping up a little here and there, but it hasn't really happened yet, so I'm thinking maybe 2013 is the year.

  3. I would LOVE to see this trend take off. You are such a great trendsetter- you saw this coming a long time ago and I love the Egyptian sculpture spotted in your living room. Loving all the gilded gold and black.

  9. Oh yes, please. Can we get some hieroglyphs up in here? Anyone? The jewels, the gold, the excess....the geometry of it all. We're longing hardcore and it's not just for Marc Antony.

  10. Dig it. As long as the gold is kept under control. I think some people have been taking the gold trend a bit too liberally. Love your artwork too. Are they cosmic maps?

  15. I could totally go for some of this. I mean I'm all over anything to do with snakes. The black, white, and gold color scheme I always love. I've been loving the scarab beetle jewelry I see around too. There's an Egyptian store over here on the base in Germany. I haven't been in yet, but now I want to!

  21. Awesome prediction -with all the attention sub-saharan Africa is getting in the design world its only right Egypt gets it spin around the living room.

  22. Interesting on the re-revival part. Especially with all the upheaval in the world (and the looting that happened with Egyptian antiquities), I think it will be interesting if this does pop off this year. Especially if less "glammed up" more "antiquities/authentic heritage" style Egyptian goods (think the world traveler, picked up while out jaunting across the world) pick up and people really want authentic gear...being careful about what you pick up along the way.

All said, love some of it - especially the more antiquities style of Egyptian decor. Which is probably not at all what you're talking about with the re-Revival (smile).

    Love the inspiration pictures!

  25. i absolutely LOVE this. i've always been fascinated by ancient egyptian art & history. for a while i thought it'd be fun to major in egyptology. what a great round up!

  26. Just featured the most ridiculously over-the-top '80s black lacquer & mirrored headboard with an egyptian theme on my vintage furniture finds blog.

We're talking a giant gold pyramid, cats and a sunburst Ra. Imagine waking up to that each am! Headboard photo

This re-revival is dangerous ground. Agree with Bernadette an antiquities approach is safe... and beware of kitsch!

  27. Oh yeah, it will happen - as it has continuously throughout our history. Every decade has examples, and it's not always clear why. Which is what makes this style so much fun! Totally unpredictable and beyond explanation. Oh sure, everyone knows about King Tut's tomb, 70s pyramid power, and Liz Taylor, but there's SO much more between, before, and after these examples. Check out my blog for more!

  28. Okay, this is weird, but I'm thinking the same thing. I keep coming across Egyptian bookends and I've suggested a pair to a client and think she's going to get them. They're black chalkware. Subdued but cool. They look like mini versions of your Egyptian queen sculpture. Love.
