Guest Post: Celine from Starbies and Sangrias

As some of you know I'm moving from TX back to my home state, AZ this week, so I've invited some of my fav bloggers to help me out while I get settled in. Please welcome Celine from Starbies and Sangrias, a new-to-me favorite blog. She's super-cute and fun. Make sure to go check out her gorgeous wedding pics and Aquahaus. Today she has one question for you...

Posh or Played Out ???

Howdy Aestate readers!  I’m super excited to guest blog today.  As Jessica gave me carte blanche on what to write about, a myriad of fun topics came to mind.  Too many possibilities!!

But I have come to a decision!!  Today, we will talk about a design element that has exploded in the blogosphere and into Americana.  We will together decide, say it with me, “Is this posh or played out?”

Today’s topic?  SUBWAY TILE

All of a sudden, it’s everywhere you look.  Look up subway tile on pinterest and you will see it pinned on a kajillion (yes, that’s a real number, JK) boards named “Future kitchen inspiration”.  And you know why?  Because it’s wonderful.  It’s clean.  It’s classic.  It can be economical, or high-end.  It can be white, or colored.  Opaque or translucent.  Used in the kitchen or bath or laundry room or ???  Take any craptastic hot mess of a bathroom, re-tile with subway tile, and all of a sudden, you have a chic palace.    Some may say it’s played out.  To those parade-raining naysayers, I say “Nonsense!”  But don’t believe me…look at these images:

One way to perhaps shake up the ubiquity of subway tiling is to lay the rectangle on the vertical, as seen here in the below pic.

If you really wanna get crazy with the cheese whiz (shout out to Beck), use a square tile instead of the traditional rectangle tile, laid in a subway pattern. This kitchen has long been in my inspiration folders.

My husband and I recently bought a house in Austin.  It is a cute mid-century (cue googly eyes and ideas), and it has the original bathroom.

Yeah, it’s not sooooo bad.  And the aqua hex tile on the floor is actually really cute.  What you don’t see in the photo is a huge crack that runs through the tile.  I have already planned out our bathroom makeover. Excuse my non-existent mood board skills.

Verdict?  I’m still lovin’ it!  Not played out just yet.  Still posh!!  VB agrees too, and she is the ultimate posh expert.

Thanks for having me Jessica!  Air kisses!!

  5. Ha ha, great/fun post. And yes, still posh but I'd break up the monotony of the tile a bit and add another colored subway tile in the mix. Gets to be a tad too much to be if done abundantly. p.s. Have a safe trip Jessica.

  6. I love subway tile, but I will agree that it is being used everywhere. I hope everyone doesn't get sick of it.

  7. I think it will never go out of style if you have a house that is pre-1950. It has become trendy and will fizzle, but it will always be classic in an older home. I would rethink subway tile (especially running horizontally) if you have a mid century home. If you insist on choosing it, I would run it vertically not in a running bond pattern (like bricks are laid out) but more modern like a grid. I would pay attention to the period of your home before selecting finishes.

I do love the black and white geometric tile and the modern sink w/ brass fixtures. Those are spot-on.

  14. I actually LOVE the look of the black subway tile w/the blue floor tiles. And I'm not one to really fancy original tile like that...but I like yours.
